„I wonder if I shall fall right through the earth!”
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
When we think about a given space on the Earth we usually think of it as a two-dimensional map showing the area in the context of its closest neigh- bourhood, its peripheries. If we, however, tried to break with the routine logic of defining things, tried to follow Alice into the Wonderland, where basic considerations and definitions are challenged, where the “classic” way of thinking is suspended in favour of the Other, the strange, but often the revealing of completely different and so far unexplored characteristics of a notion, an event or, indeed, a space... What then? Let us try to follow this lead and think about a space of Faena Arts Center in a multi-dimen- sional context.
Let’s think us about the world as a corporeal entity consisting of autono- mous elements, which perceive. In such a world everything is based on perception. All the elements building the world tissue create a set of com- pletely independent, infinitely complex substances, randomly influencing each other and creating a kind of neural network. Every infinitesimal ele- ment of this network is an active corporeality connected through percep- tors to the nervous system of the whole. Each one feels the micro-motions occurring on the other end of the world. Remembering this, let’s try to, for instance, break through to the place farthest from the one we are inter- ested in. Will we learn anything about the physical and symbolic aspect of our space? After all, omnis determinatio est negatio, and nothing de- termines a given place better than its antipodes, its opposite. These two logics, then – the logic of the opposite and of the organic unity – while seemingly contradictory, can, when in conjunction, expose that which can- not be experienced when thinking with two-dimensional map. The neural network, a network based on the database, on the information, kinetic and atomic flow allows the antipodes, although physically distant, to determine and define the chosen area to a much greater extent than the focus on its peripheries. It all boils down to experiencing on the contrast of multidi- mensionality, to honing perception and experiencing a concrete area on the level of its cubature, size, sound, smell, temperature or the quality of light...
This project is a multisensory interactive installation, which is based on the neural network conception of the world. The created space will be exactly the antipode of the Gallery Faena Art Center, that is a small part of the Yellow See (34o67`N 121o62`E).
Attention! Entering the Gallery you can encounter extreme weather conditions. The basic characteristic of the installation is „changeability” which reflects the nat- ural facts of the climate conditions, like temperature, intensity of the sound, lights, wind, humidity and air salinity on the Antipodes of FAC Gallery. Information data that will determine and shape those sensory conditions are derived and constantly updated one-to-one from available information on the web, inter alia from Yellow Sea Regional Database System.
ORGANIZATION OF THE SPACE
1. BUFFER ZONE: circa 1/6 of the space (including the window zone, which shows the time of the day and weather condition prevailing in the environment of FAC Gallery) is designed to enable customers a smooth transition from one reality–the reality of Buenos Aires–to another which is located in the Antipodes.
2. MULTISENSORY INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION ZONE
a) LIGH-VISUAL INSTALLATION: consists of the already prepared visualization (about 20-30) of times of day and weather state, which will be during the exposi- tion selected by a script computer connected to the current updated database and projected in to the space and also of spotlights projectors, which will generate the appropriate “clouds” in the space.
b) THE SOUND INSTALLATION: composed of two types of installations. First is a multi-layers mixed sound. The sound is originally six waves arranged for 5.1 audio monitoring systems. The second is a sound shower installation, which focus on a punctual sound attack. The multi-layers mixed sound installation will be respon- sible for the sound of water and wind. Like in the light-visual installation there will be about 20 audio tracks already prepared that will run thanks to a script computer and that will give different intensity of water and air noise depending on the pre- vailing of the weather conditions in the Antipodes. Sound Shower installation will run less common sounds, such as the sound of flying birds.
c) MICROCLIMATIC INSTALLATION: With the help of a computer script con- nected to the keep updated database 2 evaporators and 6 diffuser will generate odor, wind, humidity, salinity (based on food ingredients which do not violate the structure of the stone) and temperature of air depending on the prevailing of the weather conditions in the Antipodes of FAC Gallery.
