„Am I sex(y)?”
Polish-wide multimedia exhibition 2005

curator project
cooperation: Roman Lewandowski

The curator project: “Am I sex(y)?” was part of the 7th Women-Festival PROGRESSteron, organized by the Silesian Center of Culture (Górnośląskie Centrum Kultury) in Katowice (Poland) between the 6. and the 23. of October 2005. The exhibition works of following artists: Magda Bielesz, Aleksandra Hirszfeld, Barbara Kasperczyk-Jankowska, Agata Kawecka, Anna Krenz, Marcin Kuran, Anna Leśniak, Eva Ludvig, Daria Łamejko and Anna Schmidt.

The goal of the project was to analyze stereotypes which determinate our way of seeing gender, as well as to distinguish between the sphere of subjective invention and that of biological necessity. All the dilemmas and diagnosis linked to this issues result from the artist’s awareness of the general state of fluidity, which in turn is an effect of the development of new (medical, cybernetic etc.) technologies and deep cultural changes.  Our ideas of what is typical feminine and what represents the “man’s world” are wearing off quite rapidly. On the one hand the images of gender presented by mainstream media remain conform to all kinds of stereotypes; on the other hand there are contemporary individuals, believing to create their identity as free subjects, not determined by any given “sexual difference”. The „Am I sex(y)?” exhibition collects different perspectives and statements focused on the gender topic, exposing a certain fissure within the visual social discourse. Which is why the obvious and traditional perspective of body and bodiliness had to be completed by other – political, anthropological or analytical – strategies.
